Private Tour - Red Berlin: Secrets of the Communist Capital PDF Print E-mail

Red Berlin Red BerlinRed BerlinRed Berlin

The Cold War began in the ruined streets of defeated Nazi Berlin. Former allies became enemies as the Soviets took half of Europe. West Berlin remained a curious anomally - an island of democracy and freedom, 120 miles behind the Iron Curtain. Berlin itself became the spy capital of the world, with over 80 different spy agencies running missions in the shadow of the Berlin Wall.

This 3.5 hour tour covers the Cold War and what life behind the Wall was like for the Berliners caught in the crossfire. We discuss the actions of the CIA and the KGB as well as spending time introducing the Stasi - East Germany's feared security force - the secret police and their amazing network of informers.

We spend approximately one hour in the Stasi Museum which includes exhibits like:

  • Smell Jars: your Stasi file not only had your fingerprints, your phone calls, your letters, your daily movements, your love life and your medical records... they had your smell too!
  • Industrial Espionage: the Stasi stole and reverse-engineered computers in the 1980s in a desparate bid to keep up with Silicon Valley. Welcome to the world of Robotron.
  • Bugs and spy cameras: genuine spy gadgets used by real life East German 'James Bonds'. Bugs disguised as pens, cameras disguised as... wait and see if you can find it!
  • The Honey Trap: how the Stasi had a whole section of really good looking spies!
  • The Jigsaw Women: what happened to all the Stasi files after the Wall fell?

We also cover the Soviet and US embassies, amazingly within sight of each other during the Cold War.

  • Operation Gold: the single most audacious Western spy mission of the Cold War, and how it was betrayed.
  • Ghost Trains: we take a ride through formerly abandoned Ghost Stations, once guarded by Kalashnikov wielding East German border guards.
  • The Palace of Tears: how the former border crossing point earned its dark nickname.
  • The Wall Memorial: the official memorial to the victims of the East German regime is a restored section of the Wall, the only place where you can see Inner and Outer Walls together.
  • The Church of Reconciliation: the moving story of how faith triumphed over politics.
