Third Reich Berlin: The Rise and Fall of Hitler's Capital PDF Print E-mail

How did it happen? How did a nation of people known for their level-headed thinking allow what is perhaps the greatest tragedy of the 20th Century to happen? How could the world lie sleeping while the Nazis built their war machine and solidified power?

From the sick genius of Goebbel’s Propaganda Ministry to Himmler’s SS and Secret State Police (the Gestapo), from Goering’s elite Air Force to Hitler’s master plan, we uncover the heart of darkness that transformed a WWI-scarred country into the nearly triumphant victors of WWII and finally answer the question: could it happen again?

During this 3.5 hour walking tour, we cover:

Hitler’s Bunker - we'll stand above the space where Hitler spent his last weeks and finally ended his life, with the Russian forces only blocks away.

The Nazi Air Force Headquarters - officially built to be the Commercial Air Regulations building, this colossal survivor of allied bombing is one of the best examples of Third Reich architecture anywhere in the world. This was Goering's Headquarters, and is an important stop on our tour.

Goebbel’s Propaganda Ministry - what was once the German Press Office in Berlin became the nerve-center of the Nazi propaganda machine, as Goebbel's took physical and symbolic control of Germany's free press. Another impressive example of Nazi architecture, here we start to understand how the Nazis kept control once they had taken over the government.

The SS and Gestapo Headquarters - once the most feared address in Nazi Germany. The tour walks along the old Prinz Albrecht Straße (also home to one of the only remaining stretches of Berlin Wall in the city center) and examines the basement remains of these two buildings, converted into an impressive exhibit of the Nazis' rise to power. We focus on shedding light on Hitler's consolidation of power through the elimination of the SA leadership and the rise of his ultra-loyal SS.

The Soviet Memorial - May 2nd, 1945. As the sun rises into the sky, the battle of Berlin rages through the city, as pockets of German soldiers resist the onslaught of the Russian Army. Soon after 4pm, a cease fire was called and the city went quiet so fast that many thought they had simply gone deaf. The Battle of Berlin was over, Nazi Germany had been brought to its knees, and the dead were separated. The memorial represents two of the first Russian tanks to roll into Berlin silently standing guard, and is dedicated to the Russians who helped liberate Germany.

The tour runs in all weathers. No reservations necessary. Just show up.
