English Guides:

Andrew

ANDREW was passing through Berlin in 1996, and obviously at a very slow pace because many years    Berlin may very well be the place where sometime in the not too distant future he will be buried. her is still uncertain whether is it fate or simply the cheap rent that keeps him here. See what other people have to say about Andrew!

lucy

lucy had her first of many German experiences at the age of 7 - and even though the Barossa Valley (South Australia) is super far from Germany, she hasn't really been able to stay away from this fantastic country for long.  A background in modern history, languages and international politics (combined with lots of travel) makes Lucy and tour-guiding a pretty excellent fit.

Nick is a seasoned Berliner who has seen today's new Berlin evolve with his own eyes. Originally from London, Nick graduated with an honors degree in Archaeology from University of London. Nick has worked as an archaelogist all over the world, taking up a research post at University of Cambridge before settling in Berlin; he still occasionally lectures on tours of the Mediterranean. Nick has been leading tours in Berlin for years, and still professes his love for this city. "It's cool here, man," says Nick. His knowledge of Berlin's history and skills as a guide are legendary.  paulo

Paulo moved to Berlin in the summer of 2008. Originally from the land of cider - the West Country in England - he found Berlin to be very different place in which to live. Goodbye cows, fields, combine harvesters; Hello city, people, 24hr partying. He has embraced this change wholeheartedly and now shows as many people as possible the bright lights of Berlin. Having graduated in Archaeology from the University of Durham, Paulo has an insight into some of Berlin’s hidden gems, and can often be found with a spade and trowell ready to experience history.

 summer

summer is originally from California--but her parents aren't hippies. Really. She moved to San Diego to study singing, got bored of the beaches, nice weather and beautiful people, and then moved to the east coast for college. Finished her majors in art history and philosophy, grabbed her diploma and got on a plane to go further east. She landed in Berlin, fell madly in love with the city's crazy brew of art, architecture and Angst and has been here ever since. She has worked for a performance artist at HAU, collaborated on a project involving coordinated sneezing, and, when she's not showing off her adopted hometown and its street art, works with the improv comedy group Laugh Olympics as Ms. Voice.

Annabel

Annabel first visited Berlin when she was 16, and swore to herself then that she would move here one day – the city made a big impression on the girl from the faraway city of Perth, Australia! Ten years, two degrees and much traveling later, she finally made it here in 2006 and is more in love with the city than ever. Annabel’s passion for history, languages, performing and meeting people from around the world mean that being a New Berlin tour guide is the perfect way for her to spend her time, and she has no intention of leaving anytime soon – this fascinating city has far too much to offer! See what other people have to say about Annabel!

maria_square.jpg

Maria is half Swedish, half Japanese. Born and raised in Sweden. When she was 14 a modelling scout discovered her because she was so tall and skinny and she went to Paris and Milan to work as a catwalk model. Maria did not like the job because it required staying skinny and starving. She went to London where she studied Drama and for a while she worked as an actress. Maria appeared in several big movies like Mission Impossible and Evita, but not exactly starring roles. Blink and you'll miss her. She was more proud of her independent theatre roles. Especially her own one woman show: "Dolly" that she took to the Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival. To make ends meet she started taking tourists around London and also reporting for a Swedish Rock Magazine. It was during one of her assignments that she met a German Rock star. Fell in love with him and started visiting him in Berlin. Fell out of love with the Rock star, but fell in love with his city. She decided to move here and tell everyone what a fantastic city Berlin is.

Adam

ADAM hails "southern-fried" style from the deep south of the USA, growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. He studied German, Russian, and French at the University of Georgia.  After organizing a renegade trip to Berlin's 2003 Love Parade during a Bavarian study abroad, he knew he had to get back, and fast! But not too fast! Adam went on to get a Masters Degree in International Affairs in Washington, DC...he happily responds to the titles "Master Adam", "Master Greis" or "Nathan". Watch! as he may be seen rock climbing or whittling his way around Berlin enjoying the city's music, style, sneaker culture, and sports... Beware! as Adam has also been known to involve unsuspecting pedestrians in a game he calls "Dunk Tank Tourist". Let! his charming accent and American vernacular enchant you: he genuinely loves meeting folks from around the world. Bathe! in his lush and aromatic sense of humor that regularly has the other guides on the floor laughing at team meetings with his futuristic blend of Barbie trivia,  grand-dad jokes, and embarrassingly stale anecdotes. Stylin' and profilin', Adam is your guide.

Nickolai was born in ex-communist Sofia, Bulgaria, but in the 80s his parents managed to cross over to the other side of the Iron Curtain - so really, he grew up in places such as Santa Cruz, California and Chicago, Illinois. His love for the theater, the arts and 20th Century history brought him over to Berlin in September of 2005 and now he is loving this city by being constantly busy; other than giving tours around Berlin, he also teaches English and graces the Berlin theater stages; he is an actor by profession. See what other people have to say about Nickolai!

Mary

MARY is from near London. The accent gives that away pretty quickly. She first came to Berlin as part of her year abroad from her Modern Languages degree and was immediately struck by the city. Forced to go back to the University of Durham, England to finish her studies, she knew that she would return one day and in August 2008 she did. Tour guiding allows Mary to live in her favourite city whilst using her degree and sharing her passion for Berlin and its history. Mary never fails to be surprised at how much Berlin has to offer... from stalking Angela Merkel and Daniel Brühl to being  chased by wild boars at abandoned spy bases it is hard to ever get bored of the Berliner Luft.

clare

Clare, romantically, booked her one way ticket, packed a suitcase of dresses and moved to Berlin 6 months ago. Having studied for a year at
Chelsea College of Art, she then pursued a degree in English Literature allowing her to drink choice teas and read poetry for three years. Since graduating Clare exchanged the dance floors of her native East London for the wilds of East Berlin. Clare became a tour guide after various ventures including being one fourth of the "Kuchen Kollektiv" who baked beautiful cakes and bread for their market stall at Mauerpark. When you go on one of Clare´s tours you´ll be charmed by her knowledge, her enthusiasm and perhaps even her excellent lipstick!

After travelling around for a year, then arriving back home wishing he was still on holiday, booked a ticket back to Berlin. Falling is love with this unique and overwhelmingly interesting city is not difficult, with so much to see and do, Paul decided to stay and is still here nearly 2 years later. With family from both sides of the wall and a great knowledge of the city, Paul would love to show as many people as he can around Berlin!

ben_square.jpg

Ben How Ben has ended up in Berlin is rather a strange story. Although born in Manhattan, his family relocated to Kennebunkport, Maine - a southern coastal town full of sailboats and lobstermen.  Maine itself is a beautiful place, but a bigger city (New York) called, and at 18, Ben returned to Manhattan with the intention of studying art. Being young and a bit confused, he ends up enrolling at New York University, delving not into the world of art, but media and marketing. Business studies aside, Ben gets involved with high-gloss magazines and bounces  from publication-to-publication for about 5 years, all the while seeing a bunch of naked celebrities (and acquiring some good stories)  and dealing with the general pressure of living in New York. Well the pressure became too much: after visiting Deutschland for only 3 days, Berlin was the new target destination, and come September 2007, it was his new home. Now since living in Berlin, he's gotten back into making artwork, and can usually be found drawing, chatting about mid 90's hip-hop, and engaging in general mischief.  If anything, life has been pretty strange up to this point - let's just hope it gets stranger.

Colin

Colin grew up in a small town in the West of Scotland and soon realised there was more to the world than rain and ginger cows. After studying law and graduating with no intention of ever becoming a lawyer, he took the next logical step and moved to Vietnam. After teaching English there for around a year, Colin settled on the bright lights of Berlin. While he can't help but miss deep fried mars bars, irn-bru and the near tropical climate, Colin has no intention of moving back to Scotland anytime soon!

emma

emma grew up near Glasgow in Scotland, so you may be surprised to find that you understand her! She visited Berlin several times while studying, and loved it so much that when she graduated she decided to move here. The move was originally temporary but Emma was soon seduced by this famously addictive city. As a tour guide of this captivating capital she is now putting her History degree to good use. She frequently refers to Berlin as “The Greatest City on Earth” because of its fascinating history and awesome nightlife… and the weather’s better than Scotland too!

louis

Louis grew up in the green pastures of the English countryside but later in his life moved to Manchester to study modern history and politics at university. He grew tired of libraries and the confines of academic life, finished his degree and headed to Berlin to fulfil an ambition of becoming a walking tour guide. He thinks the best things about this job is that the Brandenburg Gate is his office, and he gets to meet new people from around the world on every tour.

MATTI was born in Berlin when it was still divided into an eastern and a western part – coming into the world on the communist side of the iron curtain. Fortunately the situation changed when he was one year old and so he was able to grow up in this city when it went through some of its craziest years – he saw Berlin growing together, changing its face rapidly and fell in love with it. Now he’s eager to tell the people about the city he spent most of his life in and help them understand why Berlin is such an exciting and interesting place to live in.

 clara
