Discover a jewel just outside Berlin. The little medieval town of Potsdam, surrounded by a magical landscape of lakes and forest, palaces and pavilions, the royal heart of Berlin that took the Prussian kings 400 years to create.
Here we visit Schloss Sanssouci, the palace and grave site of Fredrick the Great with its spectacular gardens. We explore the old town, once filled with the barracked armies of the Prussian kings. At its heart is the Dutch Quarter, named because of the stylistic buildings which contribute to the wondrous feel of this show-city.
We cross the Cold War spy-swap bridge at Gleinicke, which was the connection between West Berlin (controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France) and Potsdam (a city within the German Democratic Republic, or Communist East Germany).
We'll visit Cecelianhof, the site of the famous 1945 Potsdam Conference where the Allied victors decided the fate of a post-war divided Germany and Europe, and helped set the stage for the coming Cold War.
As we head to the Picture Gallery, we stroll through the ingenious English Gardens, which surprise us with breathtaking views of the royal buildings in a style very different from, and arguably superior to, those of the French gardens around Versailles.
This general overview outlines some of the highlights of this 4-6 hour tour of Potsdam, Berlin’s nearby palace city.
