Berlin has long been hailed as one of Europe’s most gay-friendly cities. We’ll clue you in on all the events and hot spots Berlin’s gay and lesbian scene has to offer!
Take a walk down to Nollendorfplatz in Schoeneberg, Berlin’s oldest and best-known gay district, where the scene was up and running as early as the 1920s! Gay English author Christopher Isherwood lived just around the corner at Nollendorfstrasse 17 in the pre-Nazi days. The area around Nollendorfplatz is still home to many gay bars and cafes, so go here for a cup of coffee or a night on the town!
If you’re in the mood for a film, check out the Xenon Kino (www.xenon-kino.de) at Kolonnenstrasse 5-6 (U-Kleistpark), which plays gay-themed films, often in English.
Additionally, the Gay Museum in Kreuzberg (Mehringdamm 51, U6 & U7-Mehringdamm, www.schwulesmuseum.de) has constantly changing exhibitions on gay and lesbian lifestyle and includes a massive archive of documents relating to gay history. If you feel like sticking around, check out the museum library, which features hundreds of English-language gay fiction!
