Cemetery - Berlin

On Grosse Hamburger Strasse, known by generations of Berliners as Toleranz Strasse, the Jewish community gave spare land to the Protestants to build a graveyard with the condition that the two communities live side by side in peace.

You will stand at what was once the site of the old Jewish cemetery, in use until 1827 and home to some 3,000 Jews including Moses Mendelssohn – a famous philosopher and a hugely important reformer of Judaism. The graveyard was desecrated and bulldozed by the Gestapo.
